A gala charity premiere of the film The Man In The Iron Mask was held in Dublin with the proceeds donated to Croi. Mr.
Bryne continues to be an active participant in Croi charity work and has pledged his ongoing support. As part of their attempt to raise one million
pounds by the year 2000, Croi has established the Gabriel Byrne Croi Fund in which donations from fans can be made in the actor's name.
Since it's inception, Croi has worked to raise funds towards the
development of cardiac services and has also contributed significantly to important research and education projects. One of its landmark achievements was the launch of the first ever, mobile Coronary Care Ambulance of its kind in Ireland, utilizing state-of-the-art medical and communications technology. Help is still needed. Over 250 citizens of Western Ireland face a wait of up to five years for the lifesaving treatment of their heart disease. Presently, patients are forced to travel many miles to one of the three cardiac units available in Dublin and Cork. For 13 years, the Foundation has campaigned for a Cardiac Surgical Unit to be established in the West of Ireland and the good news is that University College Hospital in Galway was recently named as the site for this new surgical unit. It is hoped that the first open-heart operations will take place by the year 2000 and on an annual basis thereafter, between 300-400 procedures will be carried out at this new unit. Croi has just launched it's "Millennium Million Fund" to fulfill its pledge to raise one million pounds towards the capital cost of the this new surgical unit by the year 2000.
